What i know about Astronomy It is the Study of things beyond earth: Stars, other planets, sytems and Galaxies. Astronomy has been around for thousands of years with some cultures creating constalations. With astrology scientists were able to prove that the earth orbits the sun, not the other way around. Some ancient cultures thought that every time the sun set in the sky it died and it was reborn every morning. Now people have proved that the sun setting and rising everyday is due to the earth spinning on its axis. ((oh little random fact, when you look up in the night time and you see a star... its not in fact there because even though light travels really fast it take thousands of years to reach earth so the star you look at could actualy not exist anymore. So everytime you look up at the sky you are looking thousands of years in the past - I love this fact)) Astrology has been able to prove many things the main thing is that space is expanding all the time (into what?? lol) They've proved this by something called Red shift; where they take a sample of light and look at the shifts in the spectrum ie: From our sun the helium in the spectrum is here (Black lines) and from a distant star helium is here the shift shows that the planets are slowly moving apart. This is Red shift because they are moving towards the red area, which indicates they are moving apart. ((Im going to shut up now because i could go on lol))

WHAT I KNOW ABOUT ASTRONOMY:
Astronomy (Greek: áóôñïíïìßá = Üóôñïí + íüìïò, astronomia = astron + nomos, literally, "law of the stars") is the science of celestial objects (e.g., stars, planets, comets, and galaxies) and phenomena that originate outside the Earth's atmosphere (e.g., auroras and cosmic background radiation). It is concerned with the evolution, physics, chemistry, meteorology, and motion of celestial objects, as well as the formation and development of the universe.
Astronomy is one of the oldest sciences. Astronomers of early civilizations performed methodical observations of the night sky, and astronomical artifacts have been found from much earlier periods. However, it required the invention of the telescope before astronomy developed into a modern science.
Since the 20th century, the field of professional astronomy has split into observational astronomy and theoretical astrophysics. Observational astronomy is concerned with acquiring data, which involves building and maintaining instruments, as well as processing the results. Theoretical astrophysics is concerned with ascertaining the observational implications of computer or analytic models. The two fields complement each other, with theoretical astronomy seeking to explain the observational results. Astronomical observations can be used to test fundamental theories in physics, such as general relativity.
Historically, amateur astronomers have contributed to many important astronomical discoveries, and astronomy is one of the few sciences where amateurs can still play an active role, especially in the discovery and observation of transient phenomena.
Modern astronomy is not to be confused with astrology, the belief system that claims human affairs are correlated with the positions of celestial objects. Although the two fields share a common origin, most thinkers in both fields believe they are now distinct.[

well what i think i know is
-astronomy started as a basic means of direction for lost sailors at sea before they invented the compass -in geek times they would use the stars to tell storys about great heros and their deeds -when a stars fuel runs dry it starts to calaps on it self and starts to shrink then after shrinking to a point it burst releasing star dust ,which after thousands of years can come together to form a new star, when the party is over there can be two outcomes one is a black hole that sucks up everything including space and darkmatter and a white dwarf which at the moment i cant discribe but i know that after something happens it turns into a black dwarf -galileo galilei is the the first star gazer that made the telescope, although the credit goes to someone else, and he was the first to see wonderus things that many people couldnt see or hardly belive anyways he was sent to court for unholy deeds and sent to house arest. -the moon was made when our planet started to build it self out of asteroids clumping together and sooner or later made a giant ball of gas kinda like a star then another star looking ball of gas collided with our own planet hiting it on the side then some of the mass was added to our own planet while the other part orbited around us making itself back into a sphere shape and thus becoming our moon the rest is history not astronomy
i would like to give credit to magic school bus, school, PBS ,and the discovery channel

Astronomy
Defined by the standard book of spells as "the science which investigates all the matter-energy in the universe: it's distribution, composition, physical states, movements, and evolution."
Defined by the muggle dictionary (American heritage dictionary) as the "scientific study of matter in outer space, espiecally the positions, dimensions, distribution, motion, composition, energy, and evolutions of celestial bodies and phenomena.
So what is astronomy? Astronomy to many is what mixes the muggle world and wizarding world. It's maybe the one bond that brings us together in a sense. Astronomy is the answer to many of life's questions: What really lies beyond this earth? Those balls, those small little dots that we so preciously name and gaze at, what are they?
Astronomy is the ancient science, which began with the study of the moon, sun, and visible planets. These stargazers are still centrally concered with recording position, brightness, motioni and other directly observable features of celestial bodies, but since then we've created & invented better ways of observing space. Such devices would include: the telescope, the trassite, a micrometer, and a pendulum clock, all of which were invented in the 17th century.
There are many branches and related subjects of astronomy, created after the science developed, for example there is astrometry, astrophysics, astronautics, astrophotography, and etc. There's also many types of astronomy: radio, infrared, ultraviolen, x-ray, and gamma.
If astronomy is the study of celestial bodies, then what are celestial bodies?? Celestial bodies include but are not limited to: stars, planets, quasars, black holes, comets, galaxies, supernovas/supernovae, metors, astroids, and nebulas/nebulae. These are things that are just in general not found on earth.
Astronomy is the true answer of what lies beyond. A study of which perhaps can never be completed. A study of the universe as a whole. It's almost poetic, this study. The observation of the stars and what else lies beyond this earth's surface.
